Experience with white-lipped pythons?

nekomi Mar 12, 2006 11:35 PM

Hi everyone!

I purchased a subadult male white-lipped python on Saturday. He's about 3 1/2 feet long, and just about the most magnificent animal I've ever seen. I am totally captivated with him.

I've read all about these pythons before I purchased him, and understand that they have a variety of interesting behaviors such as "casting" and frequent vocalizations of quiet, non-aggressive hissing. I can't wait to start observing some of these behaviors; this specices seems very unique.

I'm also aware of their frequent bad temperament, but this guy is sweet as they come. I handled him twice, each time for a good 15 minutes, at the show before I purchased him, and he was just as laid-back as my two other snakes at home, a rainbow boa and a leucy rat. Not flighty in the slightest. I even watched the seller pull him off a branch in his cage - twice. Neither time did the python offer to bite, and the seller mentioned that he hadn't struck in all the time he's had him (3 months). I really hope that I've lucked out with this guy; I'd been interested in white-lips for awhile, but had never found one that was to my liking.

Anyway, just wanted to scope out other keepers of these guys on this forum. I'd love to hear your experiences with the species, good and bad. Personal anecdotes would be great! I hear that this is a highly intelligent and alert species, and I guess I'm just so excited right now that I feel like chatting about them.

They need a white-lip forum here at Kingsnake.

There is a forum for WLP's that has pretty good info that can pretty indepth if you dig well enough. Those who own WLP's will atest(me included) that they a far misunderstood and have gotten a bad wrap. They are the best but require work sometimes.
Here is the forum for them

good luck you made the right choice

Thanks for the link! I checked the site out before I bought my WLP, but I can't get the old (archived) forum to work... the new one doesn't have too many posts yet, but I'll join anyway. Thanks again!

Hi there,

well, sorry for that! I had lots of problems with stupid viagra mails and postings and phishing mails. That's the reason why I disabled the old forum!

Check it out again. I guess there are lots of useful information for you.

he doesn't love me! He's the nastiest snake I own. I can't even walk by his cage without him striking when he's out. I'd read the southern (black) phase had the nicest temperament, but there are always exceptions. I assume he'll calm down with age. I leave him alone except for feeding and cleaning. With that said, he is still a very cool snake and even though I'm slowly getting out of pythons and boas, I plan to keep him.
