Another Plea for Help from you Texans

cryptobranchidae Mar 13, 2006 12:19 AM

I already received a great deal of help from some of you guys on my south Texas trip and it was very much appreciated. This being the case, I may be pushing my luck asking for help with another trip, but oh well, here goes.

I’m planning on herping the Dallas/Fort worth area either the first or second week of April. I plan on starting along the Brazos River in Palo Pinto County in hopes of finding the Brazos water snake. After that it’s kind of up in the air. A few snakes I’m hoping for are: the broad-banded copperhead, western diamond-back rattlesnake, western massasauga rattlesnake, and a Texas patch-nosed snake. I would be willing to drive a bit further for a chance at a Louisiana milk snake or a Desert Kingsnake.

I picked this area not just for the Brazos water snake but also for it’s diversity of herps and it’s close proximity to home (only eight or so hours); unfortunately though I’ll be herping blind as I have no previous experience with this area. If any of you guys have had any experience herping this area that I may benefit from I’d be forever in debt. Of coarse if there are any herpers in the area that would like to get together for a day or two in the field that would be great also.

For those of you that may not know me, I should mention that I have no interest at all in collecting anything and I do my best to disrupt habitats as little as possible.

Thanks a ton for your consideration,
Mike

Mike, that's too far north for me to be any help but be on the lookout below Fort Worth for prairie kings also. If you ever decide to come down around Corpus, let me know. I can help you with some different stuff, but desert kings and intergrades with holbrooki and indigos would be on the agenda.

Thanks for the invite Todd; I may just have to take you up on it sometime. Indigos are very high on my “to see” list. I’ve struck out on the eastern and Texas subspecies on two different occasions. I may be back down your way next winter if the moisture content for the region is a bit higher.
