Pacman health questions cant get answers

JohnnyBS Mar 13, 2006 09:26 AM

Hi, I'm new to this forum, I searched trought it and the internet but I couldnt get answered some of my questions, sorry if they are asked often or something. My frog in a roughly 10 months old Ornate Horned Frog.

1-Some time ago i noticed that very often (not absolutely always) when my frog was shooting her tongue at some cricket for exemple, well that tongue wouldnt unfold from her mouth and would kinda block on her upper jaw. So ether she has something with her tongue or with her jaw, like not beeing able to open it wide enough, but visually it seems ok. Didnt link the "affliction" with any event ether.

2-Is it normal that since i bought her that heating pad, she gets "fatter", more "bloated", as i noticed, fromretaining a lot of water (when i was moving her for cleaning she peed on my hand and suddently became super slim, a moment ago she looked fat then she looked starving).

3-Could it be bad for her tongue that she sticks it on something, lets say the thongs I use and then I kinda drag her around the terrarium in reflex to get it from her tongue's grasp?

Answers would me much apreciated cause I'm somewhat worried, thnaks alot in advance.

First of all, pacman frogs don't have a long tongue that comes out to catch their prey. Their tongue is supposed to be curled and look like it's blocking when it bites its food. Second, the bloating might just be because you scared her and she is telling you to back off. Or maybe it could be a male trying to attract a female. I'm not sure if it could be about the heat though.

Hi, thanks for answering.

For the tongue, i see what you mean, but it was really awkward to watch her try to "shoot" at a nearby cricket with the tongue too "big" to come out, wasnt normal

For the "bloating" she is like that all the time, sitting on her heated corner (the overall heat is around 80f too, she not cold) and its when i was trying to move her (she even tried to bite me hehe) that she actually lost "size", so that water retaining is not to scare me off i'm pretty sure.

So if anybody is aware of something else please help, thanks.

Sorry forgot something.

She "drank" back all that water in a night, she didnt stay slim.

Additionnal question 1: Do lights really damage frog eyes? If yes, how bright and how long does it take to damage?

Qestion2: What kind of Maximum temperature can a pacman live in feeling good? How much is too much for heating?

Thanks, bye.

Yes, lights can damage their eyes but it would take a very strong light and it would take a while. If you just have a normal tank light and some cover in the tank then the frog can decide to hide under something if it's too bright or can bask in the light too. Also, anything over 88 degrees Fahrenheit is a little too warm, otherwise just stay in the low to mid 80's and it's fine.
