Are all pieds bad eaters?

nextland Mar 13, 2006 09:42 AM

I have a pair of pieds that eat P/K rats, they both seem to only take a meal like every 2-3 weeks whereas any other of my balls will usually eat every week.. I have talked to others who say the same thing about their pieds. Does anyone else have that experience?

Maybe we just had beginers luck, but here is our experience with pieds. In '03 we bought a pair of 100% hets from Harbor Reptiles (sorry, I don't know where he got his pieds from). The male got to over 700 grams in the first 6-8 months and fathered 3 clutches! Then, the next year the female 100% het pied got up to over 1700g and she gave us a clutch of 3 HUGE eggs when she was only about 18-20 months old. Well, out of those 3 eggs, two were pieds!!! A boy and a girl. We kept the boy and he is now at 6 months old and he is about 550g. We sold/traded the female to Bradford Cole reptiles, and a couple of months ago he posted on here that she was feeding STRONG on rats still and that she was over 700g. So, our two pieds seem to have done just fine in the feeding area. Actually, they have been among our best feeders that we have had. Here are a couple pics of our pieds.

My hets suck. They do seem to be growing pretty quickly though. They are about 500 grams and were born in Aug. They will only eat about once every 2 weeks or so and I have to feed them early in the morning in picth dark. They will take gerbils, but I can't find very many in my area. If anyone knows of a source for gerbils in central FL please let me know.

Thanks for the info, mine started off great as babies (eating strong) but when they got to around 300 grams they started to eat less.

I agree with corey. I have 1.1 pieds from Ralph and some hets that never refuse food. I have pieds and hets that were purchased from other people that eat on and off or only eat mice..

Thats kind of like asking are all balls problem feeders - there are some that are and some that aren't.

That being said - there are rumors that pieds and het pieds are "problem feeders" yeah - lots of forums have several posts on the horror stories trying to get these guys to feed, keep them feeding, them going off feed, picky eaters, etc. Same can be said for normal cbb balls.

Whether it really does occur more frequently in pieds is really anyones guess as I don't beleive there is a sceintific study on this.

If you have a problem feeder - you are not alone - if its a pied - you are not alone.

Try african rats - LMAO
