Naja annulifera and Naja haje envenomations....

Jeremy G Jul 28, 2003 10:05 AM

Hi,
Im looking for accounts regarding envenomations by Naja annulifera and all ssp as well as Naja haje and all of its varinets. Basicly, anything which used to be lumped together within the Naja haje mess. Im curious to see if any of the current or past reconised sp or ssp envenomations caused any localized damage other then some minor swelling at the bite sight. Reports of Necrosis would be very helpfull along with any accounts of renal failure or blood abnormlities. Most everything I have researched regarding the group states neurotoxcicity to be the main factor of an envenomation.

BTW, if you have an account which states Naja Haje, please see if you can get locality data of the event. Being that so many sp and ssp were regarded Naja haje in littature, knowing the locality may be the only way of figureing out which form was responsible.

I appeciate any assistance you can give on the latter.

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

P.S Also, if anyone could give me a quick summary of what is written in "The Clinical Handbook of Toxicology" I would be greatly in your debt. I had this book once upon a time but cant remeber any of the info listed for the Naja haje group.

...To all of the experts in this feild, has there been any studies or accounts which have shown exsisting African Naja AV or polyvalent to work on envenomations from the former forms of Naja haje? To put it bluntly, would AV that works for Naja haje work on Naja annulifera as well? Im sre it has been proven to do so since the latter sp is found in populated areas of Southern Africa but does anyone have anything written in stone or god forbid, have a personal experince with useing haje Av for an annulifera bite?

Thanks again,
Jeremy

The cobras in the african group and most of
asian ones all cause necrosis and blistering period!
I have been nicked by a snouted cobra n.annf and necrosis set in everywhere the venom flowed
now they might not be as bad as a spitter necrosis whise.
samir works for the haje group no problems with locals like the saw scaled vipers but I could be wrong.
2-10 vials for mild to moderate bite 10- 20 vials or more for
bad bites ie. multiple bites.
hope it helps

Thanks Bud! I had no idea the local effects could be that bad from members of the past/present haje group. Sounds pretty darn nasty (I hate sensors!). I wont be letting my little ones show me first hand anytime soon.

Well man, thanks for the AV refference.

Take care,
Jeremy

They can grow fast I don't have the data here but one non banded black one grew to six feet little over 2 years.
The big ones strike like a forest cobra [precise/quick].
haje can bite during hood so be ready to pull out of range.
They can be black with splashes of red The TRUE CALICO!
Bill hast has had one there is a pic out here of it truly awesome!
The venom also can set off anphalaxis fast and has killed
people faster than the venom will!
The venom AHHH potent neurotoxins the best part of a venomous snake.
so have fun as they get big for mine I used a trap box and welding gloves and grab him fast before he gets his bearings.

Naja haje grows like weed; I have a female that is 13 months old and close to 4 ft already. Several times she knocked out a healthy mouse in about 8-10 seconds.

Interesting story about the necrosis BTW, I never heard that before and assumed effects would be pure neurotoxic.
