scarlet snake

Dave,

Whatever happened to that scarlet snake you got? I'm not seeing it on your collection list anymore. It was an interesting project, and if it did not work out, I'm curious what happened - I have an interest in getting some myself, and I'd like to learn from others' mistakes.

Cheers,
Billy

Hey,

I had the scarlet snake (Florida scarlet) for about 6 or 7 months. It was a very thick snake when it arrived, and was maybe 20 inches long or so. Shortly after I got it, it started eating whipped chicken eggs mixed with Reptitive without any problems. The growth rate that this snake underwent was truly astounding. Within the time I had it, it grew another full 3 inches. It was also amazingly thick and stout, with the build of a Gabon viper. Soon, I got it eating pinkies dipped in the egg mixture. What happened last November to the snake I believe was caused by parasitism. Although it continued to feed regulalrly, the snake became thinner and thinner every week, toward the end of the body. It looked almsot emaciated. Then it started having skin problems, and difficulty shedding. Soon afterward, it died. This snake was wild-caught, and was probably parasitized from the beginning. When the animal died, it measured a full 23.5 inches in length. I have frozen the body.
