female whites?

ffroggirl Mar 14, 2006 10:42 AM

Do female whites treefrogs croak as well as males?
Are the nuptual pads the main way to sex them?

some books tell you the female is slightly larger than the male and that the male has looser skin under the throat and calls. What the books don't tell you is that females call sometimes too and, side by side, some females and males look almost identical Females will call, actually squawk, when annoyed through handling or having another frog sit on them.

What the books say is generally true but individual White's vary so much that the best way to tell is to keep your frogs under optimum conditions for a year and watch their behavior. Males that hear sounds similar to another White's calling will often start sounding off. They will also call when properly cycled and even reluctant males will call when they hear the others.

While females do make noise.. they don't actually call. They have a destress type noise. The mating call is different and very reconizable, and is only done by the males.

Usually there will be a size difference in mature males and females, and a slight shape difference. I have seen some that are a lot bigger than others though..

You cannot tell by the pads with the whites..

The reason I ask is because I have had three whites for over 4 years and one of them is a beast. About 5 inches in length and the other 2 are atleast half her size. I am guessing its a her because of the size difference but she has made croaking noises before. That is where the confusion lies. It seems one will start and then they all respond.
