How to you stimulate breeding.

porkchop48 Mar 14, 2006 11:00 AM

I have a pair ( i think) of tincs. I was wondering if i ever manage to find out if they are truely a pair. Is there anyway to stimulate breeding. Right now they are getting misted with about 12 hours of light. they have two cocnut huts with water bowls with shallow water in them. they are eating like pigs. Any other suggestion about what i can do. The temp is about 82 during the day and goes down to about 75 at night and the humidity ranges from about 75% to 85% Thanks in advance guys

Did you mean you had the coco huts over water dishes? They will lay on dry petri dishes under the cocohut. Tincs don't lay in water (that I know of at least).

How old are they? Could you give a picture so some of us could try and sex them?

they are about a year old according to the guy i bought them from. I guess i was wrong when i thought they laid eggs in water. Does that really mean im not always right . Ok i have a few pics but im not sure if they are good enough but ill try let me know what you think

you can see them in the one pics under the cocnut hut they are the bottom of flower pots. I bought them new so they dont have any fertilizer on them or anything funky

Two things you can try. The first is to stop misting for a week and feed heavily. Then start misting heavily - that could get them started. The second, if the first doesn't work, is to separate the frogs for a month and bring them back together - this will quite often get them going. The temperatures are fine and a little water in the dish isn't a problem either.

Best,

I'll concede to Chuck on the water in the petri dishes as he has been breeding darts longer than I have been alive.

I don't put any water in my petri dishes and my frogs lay in them, but appartently having water in them is no harm either.

Any calling yet?

As for breeding dart frogs, specifically the D. tinctorius group, it is important to make sure that you first have a male and a female. This is best distinguished with the toe pads. Males have larger more heart shaped toe pads while the females have more slender shaped toe pads (This does NOT work with all dart frogs). Groupings of 1.1 or 1.2 work, but if keeing multiple females together keep an eye on the two females for fighting as well as for snaping the rival females eggs with their tongues. Dart frogs don't have a particular breeding "season" but times of excess rain can typically get them to lay eggs. Also playing a CD of frog calls can work. These can be purchase in many stores as well as on the internet. Hope this helps.
