Frogs and spotted turtles should be out within a week or two if they're not already...other than that, summer is your best bet for snakes... and it depends on which part of mass... If your east side by boston, it's a little easier than the central or west where you have the quabbin and other nice hiking spots

I actually live in the nor'east, ten minutes north of boston in Saugus near the resevoir (if you know the area). There is some prime spots, I just don't know if they are hiked out or not, I'll find out this summer I guess. Thanks for the info. -Joe Decareau
Oh and here is my little herper in training, I don't have any pics of his twin sister with herp material yet...coming soon.

I'm really losing it...it has been a long winter! Any day temps will consistently be in the fifties and that's when the action starts. Actually, early season herping is kind of the best around here (I'm in SE Mass/Rhode Island). Consider this:

- No mosquitoes and less ticks due to the grass not being so tall. Us Northeast herpers are in the high risk group for Lyme and West Nile diseases, be safe...

- BIG NIGHT! I've heard that during the warm spell a week ago the spotted sallys and wood frogs have begun their migrations. The next night that it rains and temps are 40 or above should produce some serious amphibian action.

- Turtles will start hauling out once this cold snap ends. All it takes is a nice 55 degree afternoon to get them out basking.

- I've caught milksnakes in early April during 55 degree days under a nice, warm tin. Garters are easy to find basking in the early spring...

Good luck, and post your finds here.

I saw dozens of mating frogs out at a local spot on Friday. Temps were in the high 40's. Based on the last few years, I expect to start seeing racers and the like out by mid April.

I went to breakheart reservation in Saugus the other day with my kids and saw frogs numbering in the 20's in one of the small permenant puddles. I found a spotted sally in my back yard yesterday and set up some hiding spots for snakes (hopefully the bees don't get there first!) today. I'll post here if and when I find anything. -J.

I spent a few hours out today and saw many painted turtles and a small garter snake. Although it was only a garter, I was excited to find my first snake of the year.
