I'm really losing it...it has been a long winter! Any day temps will consistently be in the fifties and that's when the action starts. Actually, early season herping is kind of the best around here (I'm in SE Mass/Rhode Island). Consider this:
- No mosquitoes and less ticks due to the grass not being so tall. Us Northeast herpers are in the high risk group for Lyme and West Nile diseases, be safe...
- BIG NIGHT! I've heard that during the warm spell a week ago the spotted sallys and wood frogs have begun their migrations. The next night that it rains and temps are 40 or above should produce some serious amphibian action.
- Turtles will start hauling out once this cold snap ends. All it takes is a nice 55 degree afternoon to get them out basking.
- I've caught milksnakes in early April during 55 degree days under a nice, warm tin. Garters are easy to find basking in the early spring...
Good luck, and post your finds here.
