My RETF isn't eating

rammstein_gurl Mar 14, 2006 03:24 PM

I purchased a Red Eyed Tree Frog on February 3, 2006, which means i have had him for about 4 1/2 weeks. He moves around just fine at night time, but he has not eaten a thing since i have gotten him, which is a really long time to go without eating and i'm pretty worried. I started off with letting the crickets run loose in the aquarium, but after talking to other frog owners, they suggested that i put the crickets in a small dish where they cannot jump out of. I do both. He knows that there is food in there because he moves his head and watches them while they are loose and in the dish, but doesnt eat any of them. I count the crickets in the dish before i go to bed and count them in the morning and there is always the same amount. I have also searched the entire aquarium and have not come across any droppings, which is also another sign. He is getting pretty skinny, his head is bigger then his body and i am worried that he is going to starve to death. Does anyone has any suggestions as to what i can do (even though i cant think of anything else) or what might be going on with him? Like i said, he is moving around the aquarium just fine, and sees the crickets, so i dont know waht the problem is. Please help!

I'm just learning about them myself, I'm getting my setup going this weekend and will get frogs within a month.

I know that they can get stressed, so maybe that's it. Or I would probably call where you got them and ask if they were feeding before and what they were feeding on. Maybe the crickets are bigger than what they were used to?

How old is your frog? What kind of setup do you have?

OK.. 1st.. if it has been 4 weeks.. he has eaten.. maybe just not a lot. He would have passed long ago without food.

Now, why is it not eating alot? Answer the following questions for me and it may help..
Is it captive bred or wild caught? If you don't know.. where did you get it?
How old is the frog? How big are the crickets you are putting in the cage?

What is the tank temp?
What is the tank humidity?
Describe your setup for me.. size of tank, substrate? plants? waterbowl?

and what type of water are you using inside the tank..

i have a 20 gallon hexagonal tank. i have forest bedding and then moss ontop for substrate. i have a exo-terra fountain, a water dish where i use filtered water, the fountain gets natural spring water because i was told the calcium in even filtered water will clog the pump. The temperatures are different throughout the aquarium, obviously hotter on the half with the heat lamp and cooler on the other half. He moves from side to side of the aquarium. It ranges from about 70-85 degrees. The humidity is usually around 60-70...so as far as i know, everything is good. I also use fake suction cup plants because i've had real ones with my poisonous dart frog and they made the tank smell and whatnot, so i prefer the suction ones, and he loves them. I ordered him from Super Pet, and they obviously come from a large place that breeds them. He is a little over 1.5 inches, almost full grown and i am feeding him 1/4 crickets.

Have you tried anything other than crickets? You might try wax worms or mealworms. When my WTF wasn't eating the vet said that they can go up to 6 wks w/o eating, I was able to wiggle a wax worm in front of him and he jumped right at it.
