Very General Question- Please Help!

I was just curious what it means when I see (for example) 2.2, or 0.0.1? I have gathered that I think the 2.2 means 2 males and 2 females, in that order. But then what does the 3rd number mean? Somebody please help out a novice! Thanks in advance

2.0 means 2 males
0.2 means 2 females
0.0.2 means 2 unknowns
