RETF opinions on setup and # to start

rrrragdoll Mar 14, 2006 08:02 PM

I have settled on RETFs and after much info hunting wanted to do a natural looking viv. All the false-bottom stuff is a little overwhelming so I went looking at setups at a pet store and found this new product, the Waters Edge Bio-habitat. It is a 29 gal, 24"x15"x21" with a curved front and includes the background, log waterfall, light, pump and filter.

The picture is not exactly what I'd do, I'd have more water, but half the bottom land, and live plantings. The display at the store was well planted and had a RETF in there among other things. I just thought with it as one package it would be easier for a beginner than buying it all separate.

Opinions or suggestions welcome, (I was looking at the Exo-terras too but they were too big depth wise).

Also, how many to start with? 2-3? and do frogs from the same clutch breed together?

The first tank, for the intention of keeping frogs, I made was a false bottom tank. I got it all done and it looked nice but I never put any frogs in it. Instead all my frog tanks were simpler in design. I just used potting soil in the bottom and planted lots of plants in it. The tanks did fine like this and it was so simple, just dont over water it. I didnt have to worry about routing cords or anything. A water dish that can be easily removed and cleaned is way better than trying to clean out a false bottom tank.
I think you should start with one or two frogs and see how it goes. I dont know what your experience is, but as for breeding them I would believe that you would have to build a seperate rain chamber anyway. Just my 2 cents.
