How big is your snake room?

coldbloodaddict Mar 15, 2006 01:39 AM

Just curious how much space people are using in their house to keep snakes? I am using 1100 square feet for the main snake room and cleaning room in the basement. Upstairs I am using 250 square feet for the quarantine room and quarantine cleaning room. Anyone keeping there snakes in a seperate building? Thanks, Jon

p.s.
my rats also get about 600 square feet of my detached garage.

Our official snake room is about 10'x10' we have the big cage in the living room as well as our GTP cage. Each of the kids also has a cage (or two) with their favorite snake/lizard/frog in it in their room. Our quarantine is a shelving unit out in the garage conversion and the rat barn is a 5 x 10 shed outside that is shared with the pool equipment.

Yes - the snakes have more run of our house than we do - LOL.

We are currently building a 3rd room for we out grew the 2 we have now. All 3 rooms were built in our basement with insulated walls and ceilings. I think they total in the 1500 sq ft range. We are buying another house whos basement is about 2000 sq feet which will also be converted to snake racks. our rats are at a seperate facility that i beleive is around 800 - 900 sq feet and growing, we have more room to expand there we just need to get more rat and mouse caging.

I have a 8'x12'room that has my rack in the corner and my rat freezer across the way from it. It is basically "my" room and I have all my assorted stuff in there. In about 6 months I should have some more racks to take up space.

My amphibian room is about 10x17, and my reptile room is about 12x12. So technically, the animals get 2/3 of the bedrooms of the house. But they're worth it!

Our facility totals about 3500 square feet. We have a main room that is about 36x72 for all of our adult snakes and lizards. Roughly one half of the room houses the snakes and the other half houses the lizards. We also have an 18x36 room for our hatchling/ juvenile snakes and our incubators. A third room that is about 24x40 houses our rodent colony and provides equipment storage. That room has a seperate furnace/air conditioner, and air ventilation. There's a full office and a furnace storage room off of the main room as well. It's really nice to have a lot of room, but the more room you have, the more you fill it up with animals!
