Don't feel bad my camera sucks!!! I can't get a clear picture, mine all look horrible, or albino. He is really pretty. Looks like he is going to have great color. How old is he now??

veiledbrian Mar 15, 2006 04:47 PM

He is 4 months and 4 days old.

he's 3 months and after this last shed is showing almost no blue except around cheeks. He is putty colored most of the time. There is a bulge on his tail, but...well, one way or another, I'll love him/her

Sometimes you can tell from day one. Some little males will just carry themselves in such a way as if to say I'm going to be a screamer and I know it! I've been looking for a photo of a little male Sambava from a couple of years ago but I haven't been able to find it. If you saw the photo you would know that this kid was a male. He had a mountain of attitude and it showed all the time. This picture (sorry its out of focus) of two little males about three weeks old shows some typical male characteristics. First off these guys are grey colored, you can see a hint of blue on the cheek of one of them. Females are usually a light tan color with red throats and the males are usually grey colored when they are little. I knew these two were males when they were abouta week old. This clutch was small, most of the eggs weren't fertile. This was my female's first attempt and when they aren't experienced they sometimes don't do a good job of getting all their eggs fertilized. There were only ten little Ambanjas in this clutch and these two were always off by themselves plotting something. They were the only males in the clutch the other eight were females.

I can usually tell the sex when they are about 3 weeks old sometimes sooner but I have been dead wrong before. I had four female Nosy Be together in a cage. They were all light tan with red throats and about two months old. One day I noticed one of them had the "bulge". I took him out and put him in another cage, a couple of days later he lit up like a Christmas tree, lots of nice blue and green. He was the smallest of the four chams and apperantly while he was with his sisters he masked his color so he would fit in and wouldn't get picked on. Smart little guy and he sure fooled me! Valerie

One good way to get an idea of the sex of little Panthers is to take a picture and blow it up as your wallpaper on your computer. You can study it for little details such as rostrum development, or bulge developemnt and look at the base of the tail. Females always have a straight narrow tail males have the package and a wider tail at the base.

Here is a picture of a young Sambava that doesn't have a lot of give a way signs but you can tell by his ragged rough appreance that he is a male.

VB...not that I am doubting you..but I have (and have had) panther chams.......and yours looks to be almost full grown....at least 7-8 months.......(regardless of age...he is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!)

lele Mar 15, 2006 06:27 PM

D - that's sort of what I was thinking, male OR female! I can't believe he will change THAT much in 4 weeks...but then again, what do I know? I could post some "bulge" pics! lol!!

He will be so embarrassed!!!!!!!!!!!!!

veiledbrian Mar 15, 2006 09:13 PM

Pretty sure that is how old he is. Unless the people at the Chameleon Company lied to me. They said he hatched 11/7/05. His father is 'Greaseball'. He is only about 7 inches long. He is not nearly full grown.

Yes, the Kammer's would certainly know his age! I think the surprise is how much color he has - maybe my guy has big surprises after his next shed!

Pssst, Chameleon Company, not Kammers.

Either way, fantastic bloodline. Who is the mother from?

I knew they had changed their name (to chameleonsonly.com) and got the two confused. Frankly, I think the Kammers should have kept their original name. So now that you have pointed this out maybe the cameleon company does NOT know the real age! lol! (JK cham company!)
