i believe that is a calico. if so, i think they are some of the most interesting mutations. if you have any knowledge about the genetics behind those guys i would sure appreciate you posting it.

good luck, looks like a good project.

"Calico" DH Sunglow?

GainesReptiles Mar 15, 2006 09:39 PM

or something "a little off" like yours?

Mine is a male DH Snow. I thought it was an Anery at first. He also has some high-pink tones running down his back, plus a two-toned tongue (black & white).

Maybe we all should throw them together in a snakepit and see what we end up with?

have you noticed that these things pop up in Sunglow or Snow gene carriers? And always with the Kahl strain.

I like yours a lot, to me a normal with teh wierd thing going on is the most unique!

GainesReptiles Mar 16, 2006 08:59 AM

I don't know as far as the Sunglow carriers since I am not currently working with any of these boas, but I believe both Chris and Frank's animals fall into this category.

My boa came from a DH Snow x Snow breeding and this is the 1st one out of many litters from my 1997 DH Snow female. It probably most closely resembles the one the Ralph Davis has (I believe also from a DH Snow female). I also noticed a photo on a Canadian website that looked similar to Ralph's and mine. Also, back a few years, Mike Joliff had a really neat Brindle boa that died (I believe while she was gravid); once again, she came from a DH Snow.

If nothing else similar pops up, I will probably breed him back to a female Snow. He is definitely different, and as they say, the photo really doesn't do him justice.

ChrisGilbert Mar 16, 2006 09:59 AM

you might get him to breed to one of your Snow females this year?

A few years ago a breeder in Germany working with DH Snows that he got from Peter Kahl (as Ralph did) produced a "three toned Albino" and another oddity.
Ralph acquired the sire DH, and was going to try and breed it to his "Freak". I asked Ralph about this last year, and asside from this information I don't know anything else. Partly due to not asking!

Good luck with him.

GainesReptiles Mar 16, 2006 11:30 AM

It will probably be at least a couple of years before I put him with 1 of my breeder Snow females ... they all have steady boyfriends and a couple of "want-a-be"s waiting in line.

This past year (2005) I did have a litter with what might be considered "3-toned" Albinos and Snows ... clean patterns, but a golden-hue background and Snows with a golden-hue in their saddles. I did not make a big deal out of it and merely stated that they had a "gold tone" to them and sold them just like a normal Albino or Snow. I did keep a couple back for myself, but don't know if I really ever have time to work with these possibilities ... too many other things going on ...

MINI-PROMO: Especially with what I am producing any day now … If you missed it, you do need to check out my "pure Central American ( El Salvador ) Blood boa breeding my #1 female SNOW boa" – “Gallery” page, section titled "Dreams on the Horizon". SHE IS GRAVID … I am expecting "triple recessive color" hets any day now (114 day POS and looking fantastic). When bred back to each other, something like 1 in 90 will be Homozygous for all 3 colors (albino, anerythristic, blood). Plus, you can get a couple other completely new designer morphs. Now is definitely a good time to be buying some SNOW boas.

ChrisGilbert Mar 16, 2006 02:03 PM

and I must say GOOD LUCK. I personally want to do a few triple recessive morphs, with different combinations.

Yours will be adding three major color varieties. I try to not get too excited, since I can't afford it. I am getting things set over here though to do similar projects in a few years, hopefully with some new mutations.

I applaud you for useing an El Salvador Blood, I really think there is a significant difference in Blood bloodlines, and the pure ones are classic!

I guess I am way late and way short.................I will have to go back to the drawing board.

this when they are newborn? Or do they look normal at birth and then gradually change? Does anyone have any baby pics of this type of boa?

Laura,

In our experience, this was visable at birth. In every example of this, they were different right from the start. We hope to have a couple pairs breeding this fall.

Thanks
John
