sick iggy?

lilsparky Mar 15, 2006 09:08 PM

I got this young iguana from petco. It was stuck in a crowded cage with 5 others. They all had broken tails, missing toes, etc. I only wish i could have taken them all to a nice home. He eats fairly well and I’ve noticed this dark looking color on his one foot, there is also something near his mouth. I'm worried it might be mouth rot, what to you guys think? He shed recently and another toe is missing. I've been trying to get him to a vet but there is no luck with the local vets, dogs and cats is all they have been seeing. The reptile vets need a month or so apt. and I'm worried it might be to late. Any advice is much appreciated. I’ve included pictures, sorry for the quality, of the foot, his cage and his head.

I'm sorry you have a sick iggy, it's such a shame the way they are mistreated in petshops. The real sad part is we ALL should refuse to buy these poor lizards so they STOP selling them this way!

But I understand why you got him, I also have done this as many of us have.

Your iggy should definitely be looked at by a Vet , a good going over, a fecal done to check for parasites. The feet were either biten by others,or some how injured and the toes/skin tissue is dying, this can spread up the foot also. I have seen it in other lizards with foot injuries.

The thing your seeing on the mouth could be a number of things, I'm sorry but can not make out your photos so I can not really see what your refering to.
They can get mouth rot, swelling to the lower jaw due to MBD as well.

With mouth rot, you may notice thick saliva and they do not usually want to eat. As this gets worse you would see a yellowy/white cheesy looking pus in or on the mouth. MUST be seen and treated by a vet, this is a bacterial infection, that only worsens.

Again I wish I could make out your pics but can not.

I am going to email you using your name here and give you an email addy of someone with some expertise/experience with many iggys.
Hope your guy can improve and have a GOOD life.

Take care,

-----
