Adopting adult burmese

SlinkyDinky Mar 16, 2006 02:02 PM

I wouldnt' do this soon but I saw a site where you can adopt unwanted reptiles, and that's something I'd like to do when I'm able to. They had a 10 yr old burmese that was only 7 feet long b/c he'd been underfed. Would adopting an adult be a good idea? This would be once I'd had experience with perhaps a red tail or a blood python. Or would it be better for a newbie to get started with a baby? I tend to prefer adult animals anyway to babies, and since he's been underfed, he wouldn't be the same as adopting a 15 ft one. Another question..with proper feeding, would he catch back up to where he should be in length, or will he always be a bit small? Also..do snakes grow their entire life, or, since he's 10, is he at the length he'll always be at?

There is nothing wrong with adopting an adult burm. The most important factor would be the temperment of the snake. If it's been well cared for it would be a great idea. It would be a more economical because you wouldn't have to keep buying bigger cages as the snake grew. They also eat a lot less frequently as adults. As for the older, underfed snake, it should reach pretty good size if fed more frequently.
