Breeding Rats in Arizona

kylescott Mar 16, 2006 05:40 PM

I live in So Cal right now, but have considered moving to AZ. Does anyone here breed rodents in a shed? Just curious how well they would do with the heat? Do they all die off when its gets to the really hot months or just a couple here and there. Also, does anyone know of a rodent supplier in or around the Phoenix, AZ area?

Thanks,
Kyle

I know a rodent breeder in Tucson, and he says that as long as you have enough air circulation, via fans or whatnot, the temps don't matter as much. He says his rodent room is hot, but plenty of fans keep the air moving and his mice produce like crazy. I don't think he breeds rats, though.
Good luck,

You'll have to run an a/c unit and probably an oscillating fan. We're in Palm Springs and the climate is pretty close to Pheonix. With just an a/c our rats in the lower parts of the rack do fine, but with temps often above 115* the ones near the top were often dying. The fans have cured that problem. You'll also need to insulate the room.

do you guys use a rodent barn? Right now the rat racks are inside next to my snake racks, but I am considering using a rodent barn (because of the smell) if I move out to AZ.

We breed the rodents in our detached garage.

a little AC and a big fan.....

some people run 20 big fans and wonder why it still doesn't work 100%

for all the electricity they use on 20 fans they could run a good AC unit........

and it will actually work............

today's AC's are cheaper and work better and use less electicity....
