building cage front: sliding or hinged ?

simias Mar 16, 2006 06:04 PM

I'm building some 4-5' cages for large colubrids. I'm a woodworking idiot. Is there any easy way to make a simple sliding glass/plexiglas door ? Are there prefab tracks/runners available somewhere ? Haven't found any good web links to simple wood cage designs.

thanks for the advice -

Since you are building more than one cage Outwater will have your cheapest track.

I much prefer sliding doors. In fact, I really dislike hinged doors.

I think hinged doors are easier to fabricate. On the other hand, sliding doors probably look better....I had an idea once to make a wooden track on the top and bottom of the cage an then slide the glass inside the track...just an idea though, i decided to go with actual sliding glass windows from a window manufacturer (i work at the place)...just my thoughts..hope it helps...

Sliding doors look nice but don't function nearly as well as hinged.. Any load over the doors will make them hard to operated (they bind shut) and cleaning is difficult unless you take the sliding doors out.

Outwater plastics has great hinges too $1.10 a pair, I use them on my cages (part # 200-200-wt or bk) tracks will cost a lot more..
