Friend's Amazon Tree Boa has mouthrot

coluberking25 Mar 16, 2006 08:46 PM

hey my pal's ATB has some pretty serious mouthrot. He told me he took him to a herp vet, who said nothing can be done about it and estimates the snake to live no more than one month. Something doesn't seem right here. Can't mouthrot be treated? Please reply ASAP.

Regretably, its asking too much for someone on this forum, however competent, to second guess a diagnosis and prognosis by a "Herp Vet" without even seeing the animal. Im sorry for your friend and the boa, but if a second opinion is needed, it should come from another Vet, I think.

I am not the one who made the diagnosis. It was a qualified herp vet according to him. He now says his boa is sitting on the bottom of the cage with his mouth open all the time, if that can be of any help.

I understood it was a Vet...is there another Vet for a second opinion? Was euthanasia discussed/considered? Again, I am truly sorry. I don't know how else to assist.

I thought it could be treated with iodine, maybe not if its as severe as it sounds.
I'd have the snake put down rather than let it suffer to death.

either suggest giving the treatment a try even if to no avail, or to euthanize the poor thing. Doesn't seem right to just let it sit there and slowly die. But I am not a vet. Maybe you can find the name of the original vet and call him / her. Maybe the vet will explain why he/she did not choose one of those options. Or maybe he did, but your friend declined.

Wish I could help - sorry for your poor boa.
