Housing Different Species?

fattiesnleos Mar 16, 2006 11:55 PM

I was curious, does anyone know if you can house any other species or amphibians with a whites tree frog besides more whites tree frogs? i am seriously thinking about improving my two WTFs enclousure but want to know if i can spice it up any other way. i am a gecko person and know its not good to house to differnt species from diffent areas together, but was wondering if anyone has any idea of something easy, and cheap to get that is local with the whites?
FEED BACK WOULD BE APPRECIATED!

I'd say no.

I've found white's to be very aggressive eaters, even willing to eat my hand. They generally don't release until I pull them off. My frog Chopchop will often track me as I walk around the room, and if I touch the tank he leaps with mouth wide open.

And he often attacks moving plant leaves (plastic or real).

I'd think this kind of behavior would be very stressful for a tankmate. Anything that moves is a potential meal!

I once tried keeping another species of similar-sized treefrog with Chopchop. The other frog remained in hiding. I eventually separated them.

ya, that is a good point. i have seen my bigger one jump ontop of the smaller male to get to a cricket and then act like he wasnt even there. i ended up seperating them because the tank got to small/ or they got to big. i have actually seen my poor female accidentally eat her own POO because a cricket was behind it and made it move. poor thing i didnt get to clean it up quick enough. after that day she has been more cautious. haha poor thing.

I hate to be the person who mixes, cuz i know it's a no no, but i have a crested gecko in with my 2 whites and they do really well. They are in a 44 gallon tank which gives them lots of personal space. They have about the same requirements, and you can get the cresteds their extra vitamins by mixing it with baby food and putting it in the tank (because the white's will leave it alone). I haven't had any problems but i might jsut be lucky. Best luck

i keep my whites tree frog with daisy mystery, the mysterious asian tree skink that i cant find the exact species on. there in a well planted 30 gallon tall tank and i have yet to have problems, probably because the whites hides out all day while daisy is out crawling around, and as soon as i turn off the lights daisy buries herself in the corner and the whites comes out to hunt crickets, soak in the water, and destroy the plants with her girth (lol)
the lizard is about 10 inches long and the frog is 3 or 4, but if the frog gets much bigger (or when, maybe more appropriate) i plan to seperate them, at least if i thought the frog would try to eat the llizard.
on a different subject, its amazing how active an animal will become once liberated from the 5.5 gallon its kept in at a pet store. i guess that goes to show you not to underestimate the seemingly inactive herp you see in a dinky little cage.

If you mix species, as always I would reccomend at least having a fecal done at a vet before putting them in a cage with whatever. Almost every herp I've gotten has had worms when I purchased it and you have no idea how easy these parasites transfer over. I work at a vet and I do all of my fecal examinations personally, so it wouldn't be a vet just telling me lies. I wouldn't reccomend mixing lizards with whites, I wouldn't reccommend mixing species from different areas of the world. However we all know people are going to do it, and it's trial and error. I will says that I feel very sorry for the lizard who gets eaten by the frog and sorry for the frog that dies of intestinal impaction because of this. Not to mention the tranferable parasites and bacteria that species of lizards naturally have in their digestive system that can have the potential to kill certain frog species. If your gonna do it, do it... just know the risk factor.
