gecko wigs out

ruhroh Mar 17, 2006 01:13 AM

So I've had this gecko for a while now and he is a fricking pain in the ass. I payed so much attention to the ideal husbandry, temperatures and substrates and everything...I can guarantee my temps are fine. It is a male gecko about 5 inches long probably 5 months old. He will not even touch anything but wax worms no matter how hard I try to get him to eat anything else. He slowly has lost any urge to chase after prey. Most of the time he is extremely docile and will climb up to my hand and onto my shoulder. Sometimes I open the cage and he decides to dart around the cage aimlessly knocking into things like he is blind, at speeds you rarely see leopard geckos reaching. Other times he will snap at my fingers and miss completely. I was pretty sure after having him for a week that he was blind...but the east bay vivarium(pretty reputable dealer in berekeley) guy that sold him to me insisted that he wasn't and whatever his problem was I had created by not having the ideal setup. I'm pretty frustrated right now. Any advice?

Feed him mealworms. He will eat eventually. Assuming he is not blind that is. Keep an eye on him for more clues about his blindness, but the only way to stop him from eating wax worms is to stop giving them to him.

I'm doing that...at what point do I cave and just let him eat the wax worms. I'm scared of going longer than a week, which is where he is right now.

omg, get the wax worms out of there. Stick to stable foods. Wax worms are not a good diet.

I only feed him the wax worms when I'm worried about him going far too long without eating. Otherwise I try every day with all sorts of other feeders. I've even tried red maggots(silk worms, pinky mice, cockroaches, crickets, butterworms, mealworms and crickets). I'm not just throwing wax worms in there. For some reason he just does not recognize anything else as food. I use reptical for calcium and the leopard gecko dust protein calcium powder at every feeding since he rarely eats. I think that wax worms with vitamins/protein powder is probably better than nothing for over a week.

Don't offer him any more wax worms and just wait it out. These guys can go a long time without food if they are healthy. As far as blindness, most leos really suck at hunting. They will miss a worm completely if its right in front of them.
