Questions on new gecko intros

MdngtRain Mar 17, 2006 11:36 AM

My first question is: My original crestie (Anton) is about 4-4.5" snout to vent (still can't remeber the correct acronyms) & my newer one is about 3.5" snout to vent. (sorry, no scale yet so I don't have weights for either). Is the size differencial too great to put them together into the same enclosure at this time? Next week Wed. will be one month of isolation for Harley (the smaller one). I would like to be able to put them together, but I don't want Anton bullying Harley b/c of the size difference. When can I put them together?
Also, what's the best way to introduce Harley to Anton? (I'm pretty sure Harley will turn out to be male, and Anton still looks like a female...). I'm used to introducung mammals to eachother for co-habitation, but I have not yet done this with any reptiles (my others all had seperate caging)... I know to watch out for signs of aggression once they are together, but I guess I was wondering if they needed a "neutral territory introduction" prior to being placed together for housing, or if I'm still just thinking too much about mammals.
Any guidance is greatly appreciated =)
Thanks!
~Chrissy

The way I used to do it with my breeding veilds was to remove the visual barrier between the cages and observe them to see if they were stressed or not. Usually introducing the male into the females cage was better as the males tended to much more territorial. Perhaps introducing both geckos in a neutral environment may be better. Obviously close supervision would be wise. Cresteds seem to be very social so I would not worry about it too much. As for the size issue, I honestly have no clue as I have no experience with this. Personally I would be a little apprehensive because I would not want one gecko to make a snack out of the others tail. I'm sure someone with more expoerience on this will chime in.

I tried to introduce Harley to Anton last night... Anton tried to make a snack of Harley. Luckily Harley is fine. I turned on the light real fast after Anton caught him, which made Anton freeze and drop Harley. And after all this, Harley didn't even drop his tail =)
I'm going to invest in a slightly more permanant cage for Harley for the time being (at least until he gets closer in size to Anton... and maybe by then I will know the sex of both for sure).
In retrospect, I probably should have paid attention to the fact that Anton was in shed last night. I didn't really notice till after the intro went sour, there was a little bit of shed left on her tail.
