The Glow Before They Go …

Is my ball every going to let me hold her – I love Kevin’s Godzilla theory it’s a perfect analogy! Remember balls are simple creatures – they pretty much go on instinct – eat, sleep, shed, breed, ball up or flee when huge hand grabs at you – over time when they learn that hand is not a highway to some gruesome creatures mouth and imminent death they’ll lighten up.

Need some clarification ….Kyle did you say this girl (who I notice is barely bigger than a paper towel is 2000 grams? Lol – shes a nice animal either way - Congrats!!

Thoughts on what we can see for 2006 – um – pastel genetic stripe (LOL yeah it rocked!)

First Spider Clutch – congrats to vwillisjr

Paper Work Included – mixed opinion on this one – “Paperwork” should specifically entail – a photo identification of the animal being sold – who originally produced the animal and from what (who the parents were) and any guarantee on the genetics and any specifications and/or limitations thereof. Additional paperwork would include feeding and other husbandry information, microchip identification (if miked) and receipt (cause we need this for taxes).

Best 15K investment – I would have to agree – a good car to get you to and from your day job.

Whats a Mudslide???? – Vodka, Kahlua and Baileys over cracked ice or:

Retained eyecaps and nonfeeding, shedding problems, f/t vs. live, its all been done to death….

Speaking of Done To Death….
African Rats got 24 threads this week and that is not including the ones that got pulled before I caught them. And yes that is right "threads" not responses!
The Critters In Question …

In a nutshell – African rats have been used successfully as feeders for those stubborn WC balls that no one can get to eat. But there are some people that have said they haven’t worked for them – so are they really a miracle cure or was it just time for them to eat. Could a gerbil or some other little fuzzy rodent have had the same effect? Yes time and acclamation is purportedly the most reliable way to assure your WC successfully adapts to captivity. Yes the importation of many African animals and more specifically rodents has been banned due to the whole monkeypox scare – you may not import these guys into the US without special permitting and jumping through a bunch of bureaucratic hoops and red tape to do so. The ones for sale are legal as these are multigenerational US born African Rats.
So here are some things to think about …
1. Why does it bother some of you (who decided to take your chances with $20 WCs ) that these people who are providing you with an additional option for feeding those animals, charge a couple extra bucks for them – or will not release females so you can propagate your own? Not sure I get this, it’s not their fault you’ve chosen the task of trying to raise a wild animal in captivity – they bust their butts to try to offer you a solution to your feeding dilemma and I’m not seeing a lot of gratitude. Please see the following thread about the difficulties these breeders have to face to provide a steady supply for you – forums.kingsnake.com/view.php?id=1031949,1032839 thanks to PHLdyPayne for providing this insight.
2. In the long run is it really worth it – I can see if you had some new wc morph that you are trying to raise and breed – but really, your $20 normals or even $200 aberrants are going to cost you $200 a year just to maintenance feed.
3. This is a bit off topic – but this topic kind of brought it back up – we keep seeing people argue that WCs bring new blood into the breeding population – I’m just wondering how true this is – since there are only a handful of areas where trappers can go to collect the animals for farming and exporting – seems to me like we keep dipping into the same well year after year after year. Wouldn’t it be just as easy to by some CBs to mix your blood – hell there are probably more people breeding balls now as there are balls breeding in the wild. LOL – just a thought.
4. As with all miracle cures – use caution – we know that balls have a propensity to become fixated on certain food items – if you are going to start feeding them ARs be prepared that they may never switch to domestic feeders.
Any further questions will require you to read through as many of the posts as you can catch before they get moved and or deleted.
