I've kept one for many years. In know they are nocturnal. The only ones I've found were in Riverside Cty, CA in the morning coiled on the road near a small gully, smack in the middle of a housing tract that surrounded the gully.
My questions are as follows:
1. Can they be found during the day (although I found 2 in the morning, due to the development around their habitat I thought it might be a fluke) ?
2. Are they always associated with rocky areas?
3. What habitat are they most plentiful?
4. Are they considered a rarely-encountered snake?
