few more questions

derrickvoncowan Mar 18, 2006 04:51 AM

1. Someone had mentioned in previous thread that great stuff had been used without being sealed (silicone) is great stuff (foam) toxic in vivarium after it is dry?

2. Are the mites described that infest fly cultures harmful to other captive animals in same house? frogs, snakes etc. Don't want to start something that will have adverse effects on my other projects.

3. Do frogs need a temp gradient? Or is it okay to make vivarium same temp throughout (around mid 70s for tincs?) without any fluctuation from side to side.

4. Can heating cable be used on bottom of aquarium in conjuction with a thermostat (probe on inside of tank but not submerged) to heat overall ambient temperature of the vivarium. Is it possible heating cable may crack tank?

5. Can tadpoles be raised in filtered aquarium (10 gallon) until they begin sprouting legs?

thanks,
dee

My answers are under your questions below:

>>1. Someone had mentioned in previous thread that great stuff had been used without being sealed (silicone) is great stuff (foam) toxic in vivarium after it is dry?

Nope.

>>2. Are the mites described that infest fly cultures harmful to other captive animals in same house? frogs, snakes etc. Don't want to start something that will have adverse effects on my other projects.

There are various different mites that infect different things. I'm not sure if the same mites that infect fly cultures could cause harm to other animals.

>>3. Do frogs need a temp gradient? Or is it okay to make vivarium same temp throughout (around mid 70s for tincs?) without any fluctuation from side to side.

Some would say no, but in reality, they need a temp/humidity gradient. No need to mess around with it. Just get the biggest tank possible and the tank will create it's own niches.

>>4. Can heating cable be used on bottom of aquarium in conjuction with a thermostat (probe on inside of tank but not submerged) to heat overall ambient temperature of the vivarium. Is it possible heating cable may crack tank?

Room temp is fine for the frogs, so no heating is needed unless your house is really cold.

>>5. Can tadpoles be raised in filtered aquarium (10 gallon) until they begin sprouting legs?

I have heard some people state that the carbon in filters has some adverse affects on the tads. I just use individual cups.

thanks for your time and knowledge there Josh. I'm new to this and I like to know as much as I can and cover as many bases as I can before I jump into anything new. I've read some books and a good deal of info from different care sheets etc from the internet but sometimes they cover things broadly and leave alot of room for error in lacking some details. Thanks again.

Your Welcome. Keep asking questions and researching (even after you have everything setup).
