Poor Snakes...

jasongonzo Mar 18, 2006 10:39 AM

Every night before I go to bed I check on the snake rooms and make sure all the temps and everything are where they should be. Well last night I went to bed at around 1:00 o'clock and everything was fine. This morning I wake up to check on them and all the power was off in ONLY the snake rooms!! Apparently the power was tripped and only affected these two rooms!! I know what the cause of this was an have eliminated it so that it won't happen again. However, last night the temps dropped to the mid 60's low 70's in the cages. I have already cranked up the heaters and will get the temps in the upper 80's for the rest of today and probably tomorrow. My main concern are RI's but is there anything else I should watch out for? Is there anything else I can do as a preventative measure for RI's? Thanks for all your input.

I wouldn't worry about an RI if they only got in the 60-70's unless you have a problem snake that catches them everytime the wind blows the wrong way. Can't really give you advise on how to prevent it from happening again cause you didn't say how it happenen this time but in my opinion they'll be fine. We all have to remember, nature isn't temp controled it reaches those temps at night in the wild and i'm sure they can take it every now and again. Anyways,i'm glad they are all ok and that this wasn't a snakecicle story! Oh,and nice normal entry down below by the way.

Thought I was being a little paranoid but better safe than sorry, right? Anyways, glad you answered because it puts my mind at ease while I go to work. Thanks again Ruben.

safe then sorry and I know how it is when something like that happens and you need a little piece of mind. Another good thing to remember if this happens again or when you get new snakes shipped to you and they're on the colder side is to heat them up gradually, adding a little more heat at a time opposed to taking them out of a colder box and putting them right into the heat. This will be better for the snake in the long run and will/might reduce the stress of the animal.
