burmese sex.

illius Mar 18, 2006 11:19 AM

Hello, I am currently selling my burmese python. She is 5ft, and 100% het for albino. From what the breeder told me when I first got her, she is female. The guy who is purchasing her wants reasurence. But unfonrtanetly I dont have anybody who can probe her, and neither does he. Is there any way I tell what sex she is without probing her?

If you can post a picture of her vent and the surrounding area for scale we can tell you one of the following:
1) If the spurs are very small we can say with near certainty that it's a female.
2) If they are large we can say it's maybe 90% likely it's a male.
3) If the spurs are in between we may not be able to tell.

You could try to "guess" by the size of its spurs and tail, the larger the spurs and the longer the tail the more chance you have of having a male, but without having a similar sized individual of known sex this can be very difficult/inaccurate. I'd say take her to a show - people are always pretty nice at the ones i go to and would sex a snake for free. The burm is too old to pop and probing without knowing the proper technique could injure the snake, find an experienced herper (local herp society) or just give the guy a bone on the price - if he really wants it - he'll wait and if he's not gonna breed it, its sex shouldn't matter.
