Red vs. Green phase

buffysmom Mar 18, 2006 02:20 PM

Today I was given a yearling hognose from a friend. He recieved it in trade from someone & tells me it's a red phase. However, it looks extremely green to me. I know the differences are subtle in hognoses & I'm new to this breed of snakes, but when I look at the little gal I see green. Is it possible she's a red phase genetically that just looks green, or do you think the guy that gave her to my friend had it wrong? My friend gave me the impression the guy produced her himself, so you'd think he'd know what he produced...
I've asked for the guy's name & number, but my friend doesn't recall, as it was a few months ago he got her.

I would say that it is not a red phase if you see green. Flip it over and look at the belly scales. Reds have tons of orange to red scales mixed in with the black. Greens, yellow-green, etc. will have paler colored scales mixed in with the black.
Here's a pic of a female Red that I had. As much as I liked her, she was a nice example of a Red but not the best. Other breeders in this forum have some awesome examples of Red phase hogs.

Thanks. She's definately not red & I think she's green.
