possible ribbon snake ID needed

brandon Jul 28, 2003 03:43 PM

Hello,

Well, we just moved into our new house--While i was mowing the grass, i noticed a small snake for the second time in week. It was prob between 16-24 inches in length, pale, dark brown, with a sorta yellowish stripe down his back. Can anyone help with an ID?

Also, I would possibly like to catch one, and observe it for a while. I know i could care for it, i already have a few herps. Do i just reach down and grab it?(though it's really fast) i'm sorry, but i'm new to snakes, and i just thought it would be cool to keep a native specie, from Indpls, IN.

Thanks for the advice,

Brandon

Just thought I would drop you a line and inform you that all native species (snakes) are illegal to capture and possess in this State of ours. Plus that little guy is probably carrying a parasite load you would not want to transfer to other herps.

Good news is we have the Mid-West reptile show at the fair grounds every month. Usually lots of captive breeds/born available. There is a big show next month in August (breeders expo).

Brandon,

I live just East of Indy.

I have Kings (Durango Mt), Black Milks, and Dry’s (cribo’s and Eastern’s).

The snake you saw was probably a garter snake. There are a few in the area. I have seen them in town.

Dann.
