Question on heat tape contacting plastic

rainbowsrus Mar 18, 2006 07:39 PM

I went to the local Container Store today and saw a few really cool possibilities for racks.

First option was a box and drawer underbed setup from IRIS, the overall dims were 27" x 23" x 6.25" Question is could heat tape be put directly on top of the plastic box for the drawer above? I'm thinking not. Even so, for $20 you get a tub with a molded handle that is just under 2' square. Would be easy to build a rack around that will leave little wastage from 4'x8' sheet goods.

Second option was another underbed storage box, overal dims 35.5" x 18.25" x 6" Still over 4 square feet of floor space.

My head is spinning with ideas, I do rather enjoy the research and planning phase, especially since I have plenty of time to execute the plan prior to actually needing the rack.

Yes and No Dave. If the tubs sits directly on the heat tape where in pressure is directly applied to the heat tape. Then no the heat tape will simply heat the plastic till it burns. However if there is an airspace this energy is diverted and will not cause the burning I mentioned.

I used to stack sweater boxes in my closet in the dorms back in the day. I would simply lay the heat tape between the tubs. This worked for yeqars till one day I sat the tub above foot (that little plastic nub) directly on the heat tape. One week later sticky smelly mess. No animals were harmed!

Needless to say I don't use that method anymore but if used. The direct pressure is all I recommend against. I don't know how this applies to your tub idea, I have not actually been to that store.

Now you know how I feel whenever I walk past the tub section of any store. The thought "can that be a cage" always drifts through my mind. I am as bad as at hardware stores I now only see building materials in the categories "reptile enclosure's" or "everything else". LOL Enjoy the lifestill.

Hi Dave

If I remember correctly, you live in the South bay area and I met you through Brian G. at the San Jose Show, Right? Anyway, there's another place in the Saratoga Shopping Center(along Target) called Storables that has most of the Iris tubs(except for the CB-75) that might work for you. I've been looking around there since I'm also considering making a ladder type rack with the CB-110(approx 39.5 x 19.5 x 6) for my large bullsnakes. I think this size tub was approx 15.00 so it is a couple of dollars cheaper(and bigger) than The Container Store's tubs. This place might be good to check out and the larger tubs would be perfect for your rainbows and smaller redtails. Hope it helped but just leave some for me though, hehe! Take care.

I went there last night and now I have even more options. They have two tubs I'm thinking about:

The Iris CB39 measures 5.25 x 17.625 x 33.375 and should work for growing many of the BRB's and BCI's.

The Iris CB110 is huge, 6.125 x 19.75 x 38.5 and will easily work for adult BRB's and small almost adult BCI's as well.

Now I'm thinking of making a stack of each. Using one panel of the 11" flexwatt per tub for heat, that's 11" x 12.5" so would make a nice size belly heat spot.
