Hognose cousin: Xenodon werneri

Oxyrhopus Mar 18, 2006 07:40 PM

This fellow is found in Latin America and there are several species of Xenodon. In particular, this species (werneri) mimics the snake in the second photo, which is a Bothriopsis b. bilineatus (tree viper). An interesting aspect is that the Xenodon is a terrestrial species mimicking an arboreal species. The Xenodon also is a savage consumer of toads, including the poisonous buffo toad, and it displays much like a North American hognose it that it flares its head, puffs it body, etc.

Oh, I forgot to add that the Xenodon is rear fanged like the hognose and it is responsible for the death of an individual in a central american country if i recall correctly.
