buying 1st leopard gecko

shaun59 Mar 18, 2006 07:56 PM

I have a couple questions, I am buying my first leopard gecko this week. First, I have a 10 gallon tank all set up with paper towels as a substrate, 2 hide spots, a spot to shed, and a calcium dish. My plan is to get a red zoo med night bulb and leave it on 24 hrs, is that a good idea for a heat source? Also what size bulb would you want in a 10 gallon tank? I was thinking a 60 or 75 watt? One more question, how do you water them, I havent found any info on that, do you just mist the tank?
Thanks for any info.

you water them by leaving a water dish in 24/7 on the cool side. As far as which wattage to use; I really don't know because i use a 10/20 gallon under tank heater. But what i do for my other reptiles is i just buy a wattage i think is best and if it isn't the right temp i just exchange it.

Congratz, you've done your homework! Tons of people get leos thinking their like goldfish, throwing them in a tank with food and sand and forgetting they exist untill they want something pretty to look at. Then the geckos get impacted and die and there like poor gecko must have been sick, so they get another, and it dies too so they figure that there just hard to keep alive...Congratz! Have fun with your gecko!
