What type of Corn do I have?

iamkylemcandrews Mar 18, 2006 10:53 PM

Hello everyone, just picked up my first snake, a Corn Snake from the Pet Store which I work at. He is pretty bright orange and looks very similar to the Corn Snake on the front page of the Corn Snake Forums...

He's bright orange and if you see the picture on the opening page of the forums he is pretty much a replica of that...

Is he a normal Okeetee or a Hypomelanistic? Any beginners tips/etc would be largely appreciated... Also, is there a easy way to sex these guys?

Tank setup is 20g Long with 150 watt incandescent light and heating pad under tank on one side and water bowl on the other... Hiding spots on both hot and cold sides of tank...

Thanks everyone...

Snake Newbie,
Kyle

That seems like a LOT of heat having both a bulb and a heating pad. Put a good thermometer directly on the bottom of your tank under the heat light/heating pad.

...that snake does'nt need it...as long as the ambient(surrounding/room temp) air temp is between 74 and 77,with some fluctuation being ok,the under tank heater is plenty.otherwise sounds like a good setup, simplicity is good, and so are a couple hide boxes....as for your morph/phase/whatever-now i am surely not into/up on 'all the latest' crazes to grasp the hobby by the plums, but it looks like an okeetee to me-a nice one at that....if it was hypomelanistic,it would have strongly reduced,or at least noticibly reduced, melanin(black pigment).the black on yours is prominent-it looks normal to me.

Yeah - at this time of year, you shouldn't need heating at all unless your in Canada! Room temp that's comfortable for humans is plenty warm enough for corns. I've had 5 for 5 years, & although located in Southern AZ, I've never provided mine with lights or pads. Just keep your place what is comfortable for you & they'll be fine.

What room temp do you have that you dont need extra heating during winter ? I thought the nights could be chilly .
I dont use heat either May to sept but do other months .
