i think my desert iguana has almost permantely messed up her back

poteluz Jul 28, 2003 04:11 PM

shes was always trying to climb the glass and her back would bend and almost look like she was about to fold , and now any little thing she does her back bends inwards even when shes just standing on all fours, its like if somebody pushed downed the middle of her back, i don't know why she does it

for these things. I've been away on vacation but you got some great advice in this forum. I have my adult pair and 1 juvie in a a vivarium thats almost 6 feet x 2,5 feet x 1,5 high. . sounds like yours wants out and wont be happy. Thriving is one thing but living ihappily is another to these intellegent lizards.

I would only add to the excellent advice that you got to watch feeding too many bugs. I feed mine about 2-5% insects. Keep checking as many supermarkets as you can and recheck them as around my way dandilion greens appear periodically in them.
Also dont be alarmed if your DI doesnt surface anynmore. Mine will brumate for up to 7 months.. Under artificial conditions mine dont know when winter or summer is outside. it seems they go down a few months after mating no matter what season it is outside and there is nothing i can do about it.. Find a place where you can keep them at mid - upper 60s or they might burn off too much fat leaving them underground in the cage at higher temps
Good Luck

how does yours act? and do yours eat alot, mine doesn't seems to eat alot, and i only fed it a lil bit crickets and waxworms once, mine doesn't really eat alot, she'll eat a few strips of greens , or a litle bit of grated carrots and thats it, even a lil bit of fruit, her stomach never looks full, and shes still real small shes not even half grown yet

coming right out of brumation they pig out especially a gravid girl. They eat less as they get closer to brumation coming out of the hidespots less frequently and for shorter periods.

But I would say that possibly because of the jumping on the glass that yours is not happy and this could contributr to the lack of eating.

only thing she really eats alot is waxworms, superworms and crickets, so i'm giving her that because she was already losing her fat deposits on her tail, she didn't really eat the greens and carrots and stuuf, only a lil bit

DI'd will eat the leaves of ragweed ( if availabe)--- and dropping the shreeded leaves in the cage gets their attention. They only eat small amounts at a time but will eat off & on all day so a fresh supply of greens/ carrots/ etc changed out several times a day will help. Toss in some small flowers (yellow if possible)too.
