Uromastyx size

Grish Mar 20, 2006 07:12 AM

Been keeping herps for a long time, but have kept my 1st uro for about a year and 1/2. My question is about uro size at that age.
Background: purchased as a juvie, supposedly captive bred, cage is 30G w/ basking light reaching 120 degrees F, Zoo Med UVB, UTH for additional heat, washed sand substrate, fed mixture of greens dusted w/Miner-all, occasional cricket
Problem: little guy doesn't seem to be growing. At a year and 1/2, he's only an inch or so larger than when he was purchased. Approx. 5 1/2 in. SVL. Also, feces has changed shape. It was originally "pellet-like," and very neat to clean out of cage. Now has no definate shape, kind of runny.
Other than those two things, he seems perfectly healthy. Very active and attentive, eats like a horse. Plan on making a vet appt. but was wondering if he's growing normally and I'm worrying over nothing. Just seems like he should be bigger by this age.
Thanks.

Given all the symptoms, my guess would be some sort of parasite. You said in a lower post that you were going to take a fecal to the vet, and I think that is probably the best place to start!

I'm glad it is going to the vet. Please let us know what they say. FYI if your Uro looks like Herp-Keepers does in the pics below it is in bad shape and be ready to dedicate some time to help getting it back on track.

Thanks for the interest. He's going this afternoon and like I posted earlier, I'll let you know what he [the vet] says. I still can't get anyone to answer my original question, though.
As you can see in my sig., I have a fairly large herp collection and have been in the hobby for about 20 yrs. I've just never owned a uro before so I'm not aware of growth patterns. Can anyone tell me the normal SVL for a year and 1/2 Mali? Obviously, there will be individual differences based on genetics and quality of care, looking for a rough estimate.

I don't know that anybody can accurately give you an answer on size but the size of yours goes along with my Mali in comparison (yours is prob a little bigger). They grow very slowly but some people experience faster growth rates in captivity due to diets/setup and those types of things.

Well, I just got back from the vet and basically he told me a whole bunch of nothing. He did come to the amazing conclusion that the uro was underweight. Ummm, duh, that's why I was there in the first place. There were no parasites found in the fecal or cloaca swab, other than a trace amount of pin worms, and some of the stuff I've read says that small amounts of pin worms may actually be beneficial in breaking down vegetable matter. He gave me some Panacur so I'll treat the little guy and see what happens.
