How do you deal with the smell?

ceroza976 Jul 28, 2003 05:01 PM

Seriusly, how? I clean my cages, wash everything, and at most the cage dosnt smell for 3 or 4 days. Constantly changing the paper towels dosnt seem to have a major effect. I change the towels almost daily, i do a bigger cleaning every 2 - 3 weeks with washing the hides and branchs, and every 2 months i completly wash the cage, including cleaning the glass and lid, but the smell still comes back after about half a week! I have the geckos in the living room normally, but latly iv had them outside due to the nice weather. Anyway, to back to my question, how do you, and more specifically by "you" i mean the people with large collonyes of leos, control the smell?
Thanks for you time, take it easy

I don't have a large colony, but i do have 5 geckos.. and i don't really have a "smell." they live in my room with me, and if any animal in the room has a worse smell it's the soiled bedding in my degu's tank.. if your gecko poop smells THAT bad.. you might want to consider a fecal check because it's not supposed to be that bad..

i only own a few geckos but i have never noticed a smell in any of the cages, since i spot clean every or every other day.

...lol. After 11 years of breeding Lizards, I think my nose is desensitized to the smell.

i dont even notice it, but my family (mostly mom and older brother) complain day in day out about the smell. I dont know how they smell it from across the room, but it seems to bother them more than it should. I only notice it when my face is practically in the cage, so im sorry if it came off like i had sick leos. It was more a post to relieve my family and me of bickering. Sorry if it sounded like something was wrong with my leos, but we use air freshner now in the room and according to them its not that bad anymore.

I know what smell you're talking about, and I only had that problem when I kept them on sand. I moved them to a new tank with a paper towel substrate, plus cleaned all their "furniture," and now there's no smell.
