Feeding Schedule

mrmonitor Mar 20, 2006 11:27 AM

Ok so one of my savannah monitors is a little less than a foot long, hes an avid eater, until recently he had been eating about 15 large dusted crickets a night and a fuzzie or two, after reading that a whole food diet is nutritionally complete and the best way to feed monitors, I thought Id try it. So I gave hima mouse, not too large, bigger than a hopper though. I kill it for him or at least stun it so it cant hurt my monitor. It takes a few minutes to get it down, maybe 5 minutes not hours or anything. If I follow this schedule how often should he eat?, right now Im giving him these mice every other day, hes not fat, very healthy but not fat. Does this sound ok?

It should take a monitor of that size about a few seconds(or less) to down an appropriately sized mouse. The mouse must be too big.How often depends on cage conditions(heat). My Blackthroat when she was 12" was barely a hatchling and ate 30-50 crickets daily.I believe in daily feedings when small(if heat is sufficient). She's 5'(4 years old) and I've slowed her down to a large rat once or twice a week. Its all trial and error unless someone is there to monitor your Monitor
