Do not release your snakes!!

SalS Jul 28, 2003 05:11 PM

This message is mostly for the newbies out there. If your snake gets too big or you no longer want it, DO NOT RELEASE IT! There are plenty of resources that you can use to give your snake a new home. Most places in the country releasing it will cause a slow death for the snake. It also gives other snake keepers a bad image. Why am I saying this. The ball python in this picture was found in the wild in Central Alabama. It is over 4 1/2 feet long and very healthy. I doubt it was an escapee because it was in a remote area far from any homes.

I find it odd that someone would release a ball python for getting too big. Ball Pythons dont even get that big, most are less that 5 ft. That is a beautiful bp too, cant believe someone would just let it go.

Some times newBs get them when they are small (

When the snake gets too big for their enclosure or the person has a problem with either live feeding or feeding F/Ts....

For WHATEVER reason... this AIN'T Africa, and even if it WERE, the odds of survival are next to none when a captive herp is released into an unfamilar surroundings... This is only one of the downsides to cheaps on the market.... I think that sellers should be more informative about what NOT to do with an unwanted snake. You see stuff on Animal Planet that doesn't even MATCH what some ppl do to herps, ignorance hurts herps more than anything...

I hope you post a "found" ad in the local paper, and not just assume that someone dumped it......

It's bad enough to just release a snake in the middle of nowhere in a place that it probably isn't going to survive, but to do it because it's getting too big makes it even more ridiculous! You'd have to do next to no research before you buy one not to know how big they can eventually get! Every caresheet in the world concerning BPs tell you that they can get anywhere from 4 to 6 feet long. And yes, that is relatively small compared to what a lot of snakes can get. That was one of the first things I knew about them before buying one! Man, do some research before buying an animal, but especially a herp. Make a decision before you buy it whether you can handle it getting that size or not. If you even think for a second that 4 or 5 feet will be too long for you too handle or will take up too much space then, DON'T GET ONE! Get something smaller that requires less space! Otherwise, you're just wasting your money to begin with, and your going to eventually harm the animal by just getting rid of it like it's a piece of garbage!

I know, I get so mad when I get an e-mail asking me what they should do with the BP they bought 2 weeks ago, what do they eat, etc... It is so wrong. I know you can hold back, because I AM HOLDING BACK! I want a Brumese, but I know I don't have the space for an adult Brum so I DON'T get one! I will when I get a house where i have the room to house one, but common people!

A kid told be once that his dad had a python (didn't specify what kind) and it got too big to he beheaded it. Freaking idiots like that just get big snakes to impress their equaly idiotic friends. Ok Im done ranting now.

MightyPython Jul 29, 2003 07:34 AM

You've got to be kidding! He beheaded it? What's the purpose of doing that? Man, if that's true, that's even worse yet!

shadow4108 Jul 29, 2003 09:47 PM

THATS HORRIBLE!!! I can't beleive someone would do that, and to think the example that person is setting for their kid.
