eggbound question

bluerosy Mar 20, 2006 03:07 PM

My female sulfur lav brooksi king was eggbound last season so I did not produce any of these gems. I palpitated her and counted 16 eggs.

This year she is still eggbound as she has retained these eggs from last season. She is fat as a house but eating and healthy in every other regard.

My question is should I try and breed her this season in hopes that she will expell the old eggs or should I wait until she expells them herself? Or is the oviduct so tangled up that she will most likely retain this years eggs as well?

I do not have enough experience to answer this correctly but shouldn't she have reabsorbed the eggs?

If she is egg bound in the traditional sense then the eggs would have harden or rotted and she should have died. If they are just ova as I have made comments about a few times then there are two possibilities. One is the ova have dried and hardened and she will produce few if any good eggs this year but she should pass the small dried "slugs". The other is that she developed the ova and they are soft and large like eggs and she was never fertilized and she will drop the 16 eggs about 30-35 days after the first good breeding she has. All the eggs might not be good but I would bet on 16 eggs no more no less.

In other words she won't re-ovulate this season with those (large, soft) ova at the ready but she may double but I would try to avoid it. Well I guess that would depend on how you feed her.

Either way I would say breed her because she is in that mode apparently. also how about a pic of her both flat and one with her lower 2/3rds hanging down.

Last year during the summer months and all the way up until brumation she looked as if she would explode. The eggs are now hard and shriveled up a bit . She has lost a little size due to the egss drying up and hardening. I am just concerned if she was bound up last year shouldn't she have passed these by now. What idf she is still bound up and gets refertilized..?

Seriously, I have had eggbound sbnakes before but this one looked as if she will spli her sides. I will post a pic tommorow.

i had a female Axan het ghost clog up after laying 2 good eggs that hatched! she is still bound w/ hard eggs, early on she went to the vet and tried oxytocin "no worky" and then was told it only works on live bearers, well as with yours Rainer mine still eats and is active but the eggs may be fused to the uterus which probably make her Baron.
Though i had a Cal that a few years ago bound up half a clutch laid half and expelled the bound eggs within a month bred again with a small clutch thinking only half her Girl parts or ova were viable.Chris
