How deep should water be for a hatchling musk?

PhunkeyPhish Jul 28, 2003 05:26 PM

Just wondering how deep the water needs to be for a hatchling common musk turtle.

Just slightly over the shell would be best, however if you have lots of live or fake aquatic plants where they can gain a foothold to come up for air that will work too.

I agree with Rick D.
Not much over the carapace at first unless you have plenty of plants for it to crawl up in.
Of course, we are talking about a new hatchling. It won't be long before you will notice that deeper water will be OK for it.
I have used things like shredded romaine lettuce or 'baby' greens for my hatchling muds/musks. They can climb up in it and I have noticed that they do in fact eat a fair amount of it.
The drawback is that it has to be changed every couple days.
After the initial month or so and it is growing well, the larger the tank the better.
