Weird Eating Behavior

stfu843 Mar 20, 2006 10:50 PM

Hi! Got no response from the CalKing forum so I'll try here. My good CalKing has started doing the oddest thing. He will strike his prey, constrict it, then drag it to his water bowl and drown it before consuming it. Anyone else ever see this? I have had Harley for almost 5 years, he has done this 3 times now. Thanks

I dont think hes drowning it. It just happens into the water bowl.I have had several that would strike and drag the prey backwards, I only "assume" that they just feel more secure when they have pulled the prey back to where they feel comfortable at.I wouldnt think it would be anything to worry about.

Just my .02 worth

Toby, that's the pretties fake snake I've ever seen! lol

Pertaining to the posted subject, my hypo brooksi LOVES to drag her prey around as well, she's never taken it to the water bowl though. Snakes do crazy things, I wouldn't worry about it.

I've seen this frequently with kings, and occasionally with my corns. If you think about it, kings are more likely than not to encounter prey along watercourses in the wild (e.g., water snakes), and should be unperturbed by water or wet prey. It should have no ill effects as long as the water is clean to start with. If anything, it is probably good as he will get a little extra moisture.

If it bothers you, remove the water bowl before feeding. The day before would be best - definitely not if he already is in feeding mode! Otherwise, remember to refresh the water after he's done dunking his meal!

Good Luck,
John D
