Heating Problems

badkittyamy Mar 21, 2006 12:48 AM

I find that when i turn of my leo's top lamp the cage temp almost always drops down to the 70's. Can't control the temp of the house since it's not my place (it gets a bit chilly at night). There is a heat mat under the cage, temp with the thermometer on the cage isn't much effected by it though. Until I get back to my usual housing should I keep the top lamp on? I don't want my baby getting stressed from being too cold but i don't want him stressed from light all day either. I saw someplace saying to use a 60 watt red glass bulb since they can't see in that spectrum but haven't been able to find any in the pet stores here.

You can use a red light bulb. Reptiles don't see the light from these.

I haven't been able to find any here...but I guess if we are finally leaving tonight I can find one tomorrow and he will be fine. Another question is how dark should it be for him to consider it night? We get lights from outside our dorm room shining in as well as the fact that my roomate and I are pretty nocturnal ourselves. I tend to go to bed around 3 and she 5 will the lights from our monitors disturb him?

i have the same habit of going to sleep past 3:00 (thats what college does) and i have never seen my geckos have a problem with it. the lighting of the minitor isnt that bright to make them think its day. every time i have the monitor on past midnight they're usually out relaxing on the heat pad spot. and dont seem to mind the dim lighting of the monitor.
even when i turn on the lights they dont seem to be stressed out by it, so dont be afraid to turn on the lights.
or maybe this is just my case since my geckos are so chill.
all they care about is crickets and a warm belly.
