Opinions on rats or mice for kingsnakes?

kfisher29 Mar 21, 2006 02:39 AM

I have been feeding my subadult speckled kings 2-3 rat pinks a week and I'm wondering whether the rat pinks have enough calcium in them. Are mice better to feed instead, having more bones and stuff and maybe more calcium. Thanks,Kevin Fisher

Not an expert on this, but I would think the thicker baby bones of a rat would supply more calcium. Rats in general are more nutrient laden than mice. Least that's my understanding.

im not a pro by anymeans so no one jump my case for speaking on it but the best growth rate ive had with my brooksi have been with the rats and when u add the ease of keeping and breeding rats compared to mice i personally have to say use ratsif they will take em

I would go with mice rather than rat pups because of the calcium issue. An adult mouse will have denser bone mass and more of it than a rat pup would.

I only start feeding my kingsnakes rats when they are large enough to handle adults. This system has always worked well for me. Phil

Iv never used rats, i dont know why but just havent.

Mice all the way.

I power feed all my young so they quickly get onto medium - adult mice.

just my 2cent worth.

I have a 3.5' Cal King who eats strictly small adult mice. I tried her w/ rat pups and she refused. This still puzzles me, as I was of the understanding that Cal Kings were supposed to be pretty opportunistic feeders.
