Buying young VS Semi-adult

wing Mar 21, 2006 07:20 AM

I need advice: I'm getting my first berdie and can't decide whether to go with a 5 month old or a 10 month old. My concern about the 5 mo is it might be too fragile for me because I am new at this and it is young. But with a 10 mo old, it might be too late now to tame it. I want an affectionate pet. I used to have an iguana that acts like a dog- potty trained and sleeps on my chest.

But these dragons I'm choosing from have great coloration- the 5 mo is a screamer (oranges on the side) and the 10 mo is a pastel.

Any advice from you guys would be deeply appreciated.

It really doesnt matter. Five months old is a very well started age, and as long as it is healthy when you buy it you shouldnt have any problems, I would suggest getting a book on beardies and if you have any questions post them here.

A 5 month old dragon that is more than 6" long, healthy and alert is well started and won't be any more difficult to keep than the 10 month old dragon. Providing you give it the proper care, temperatures etc it should grow up fine. The 10 month old will still need the same amount of care as the younger dragon and is still young enough to tame. At this point I suggest you get the dragon that appeals to you most.

If you haven't already done so, read up on the various caresheets available online, picking up the 'Bearded Dragon Manual' and other bearded dragon books is a good way to know all the basics on their care. About the only real advantage of the 10 month old dragon is you can put him into the adult sized cage right away. The 5 month old may need to have a smaller cage, depending on how big he is now.
