My burm is sick !!!

Thomas j May 19, 2003 11:38 AM

I have been trying to get my burm well. She will breath real had then some gooey stuff shoots out if her mouth. I have been given her shots of amackicin. And the temps are up in the low to mid 90's. The vet says this should knock it out. Is there something else i can do.

Your burm wouldnt happen to be in shed would it?
If so, thats the cause of the RI-like behavior most likely.

No she is not in shed and i did not notice it until after shed laid eggs.

I thought my burm had RI because he started breathing real heavy (it seemed) one night. Part of his body would lift up off the ground a couple inches when he inhaled.

However, he was about midway though a shed cycle, and once I turned the heat way up and the humidity way up the next morning he was fine and never saw that happen again, but still kept the temps and humidity up. I never saw anything come out of his mouth or nose.

Could it have just been shed or do you think he just recovered realy fast from RI?

Thanks,
Ben

Some burms get RI like symptoms during shed because their nostrils get clogged with loose skin and the like. In some animals (like my female) it can look like full blown RI but goes away after shed.

Crap Tom,... sorry to hear this. Okay,. this does sound like advanced upper respitory infection to me. I had a bad bout with it in the late 80's. We tried Amickacin, but I never saw any marked results. Amickacin is a potent antibiotic and is VERY hard on their kidneys. Make damn sure she is injected only in her first third of her body and it's a very good idea to also inject her with electrolytes to counter the severe dehydration that goes along with this sickness, the antibiotics and the high temperatures. I would not go so high as 95. Maybe 92 at best. Ask Rob what he thinks about this. And above all else keep the humidy levels very high. Keep us posted.
Oh!, I almost forgot,.. get a tube feeder from your vet and force tube her pedialyte every day, several times a day. She must remain hydrated and this is very readily absorbed into the system.

I have the temps up, the humidity high,i know to give her the shots in the first third of the body. If it is in the lower half the kidneys will filter the meds.I am so worried about her. I will get the feeding tube and pedilite this week. Thank you so much for your help.I will keep you posted. She is just a normal burm but she is my baby. I will do what ever it takes to get her well.

Brian said it is an advanced upper respitory infection. She still eats like a champ. What else should i do. Thanks to you in advance and to Brian for helping me.

It sounds like you're doing well by her temps and humidity levels. The most important thing to remember though is to keep HER hydrated. When RI's kill the snake it is often from a blocked trachea when the mucus becomes overly thick due to dehydration and the snake just can't push it out. If they remain hydrated then the mucus can remain more wet and loose and the snake can more easily exude it or expell it until she heals or is cured.
And what do you mean, "she is just a normal burm"? So what? She is just as important as any other reptile on the planet. Personally, I love all my reptiles equally regarless of if they are a 200 dollar blood or irian, or a 5000 dollar purple phase albino retic. And even though I do have some that I enjoy their personalities more than others and I suppose one could say I do have favorites, I still view them all as equally valuable living things that deserve my respect and love. Heck, there's this one male yellow malaysian blood that is just mean as an Al Queada terrorist and is always trying to kill me (in his mind) or do the most damage he can to me. And he gets on my nerves and one would think I hated his little reptilian guts the way I complain when I have to work with him. But I don't. I love the little guy and even find it amusing that a little 5 foot snake thinks he's so tough. ha ha. Hell,. Id' miss it if he were suddenly tame. Anyways,. I have rambled on enough. Keep us posted on your burm. I wish you all the luck on curing her.

I use a product called Tylan. It was so utterly awesome, and I Have yet to hear or experience *anything* bad with it.

Tylan is a Cattle Antibiotic for Respiratory infections.

I read about it on several of the KS.com forums, saying it worked wonders on snakes.

So I decided to give it a try on a new blood python I got in. Her R.I. was very bad.. she was doing was you explained. Sneezing/coughing out blobs of Goo/Snot. She was actualy keeping me up at night because her caughing/sneezing and breathing was so bad.

So I got the Tylan, and gave her .11 CC's (per pound of snake) every other day, for a week.

The Day a fter the FIRST injection she stopped sneezing. Stopped coughing. Bubbles stopped coming from her mouth and nose, and she stopped the noisy breathing. It worked so fast. I was totally amazed. I had used Baytril in the past for R.I's, but I don't think I'll stray from Tylan from now on.

After the first injection, despite every syptom of R.I dissapearing, I still gave her to the other two injections. Since it is an anti-biotic, you have to, to keep the R.I. from coming back.

So now, I highly reccomend Tylan.

Someone pointed me towards this by Jeff The "Boaphile"-> http://forum.kingsnake.com/boa/messages/111810.html

It's what mostly made me try Tylan, he so highly reccomended it.

So I suggest going back to your Vet and asking them about Tylan. Or, order some online. It's about 10 bucks for a bottle that will last for nearly ever. Most Cattle Supplies, Large animal VEts, and other random places will carry it.

I hope this helps.

OH, and if *anyone* has ever heard bad things about Tylan, I would love to hear about it!
