House Snakes

coastalherper Mar 21, 2006 04:20 PM

Hi,
Does anyone here keep or breed house snakes? What are your experiences with them? Do they sell well? Do you know any breeders that breed them as I am interested in contacting them about how well they sell for them.
Thanks!

I don't breed them anymore, but I bred them for years. I sold every baby I ever produced and tried to sell (I gave some away to friends, etc).

They weren't hard to sell at expos because they were inexpensive and I was there to talk buyers through the deal. I could have sold them online, but never had to resort to that (and this was pre-kingsnake.com classifieds).

I wouldn't want to produce 100 babies a year and try to sell them, but I have no doubt I could sell 40 babies a year.

I only have one...a large female. I haven't tried brreding her yet because even thought females can breed early, its better to wait a while. I've been waiting a good 2.5 years and about 300 grams now
I might be picking up a male for breeding this April at the next expo. If I can find an adult male (doubtful) I might try breeding. If I find a young male, I'll probably pick it up and wait a little longer before breeding...

I don't think you'd have any problems selling the young. They are really cheap at expos...usually 10-20 dollars (except for albinos which are silly expensive). Not to mention the fact they are so easy to keep. Thus they catch people's eye pretty quick.
I'm willing to bet pet stores will pick them up too since they are captive bred, easy to keep, and something few people have seen ("unique" stuff sells good).
I doubt you'll be making much of a profit however either way.

Pretty easy snake to work with. My pair of reds produce on as regular a schedule as I let them. No problem selling babies though they don't bring much (common here).
