Perlite questions....

Keith Hillson Mar 21, 2006 06:51 PM

Ive decided to use Perlite this year. Last year I had some excess moisture issues with my eggs. One thing I did like about sphagnum is that if there was condensation on the interior lid it wouldnt drip onto the eggs. Any suggestions ? Does anyone cover their eggs with anything ?

Thanks

I laid a doubled over paper towel over my corn eggs, and they turned out great. The paper towel did get a little damp, but it helped keep in some moisture. I mix a little peat moss in with my perilite. Derek

I forgot. I did have alot of condensation in my incubator, and I had the container lid set on top of container loosely. Derek

Man just use vermiculite. Doesn't your boy Will use perlite?? If you go that route I have a bag for you that I am not going to use. Come on down to Reptile Fest and pick it up.

It is a educational reptile show. Biggest one in the country. All the "vendors" are CHS members and they bring out their stuff. I am going to bring my bad a$$ painted cages and some animals. It is in the south side of Chicago. Their should be some killer animals there like some green rats and a indigo. Oh yeah and no animals are for sale. There will be frozen rodent for sale and insects and novelties as well but no snakes. There is supposed to be a banner add in rotation on K.S. but I have not seen it.

Hey Bro,

I just mix my perlite real dry and use lots of it and I dont seem to get much condensation on the walls or ceiling. I think that if you use perlite, you can keep the mix dryer than vermic, because not nearly as much h2o gets "locked up" in the vermiculite. More moisture seems to envelope the egg because of the very loose breathable nature of the perlite. The eggs are actually surrounded by humid air but they don't get as wet because they are not really soaking in the substrate like they tend to do in wet vermiculite. Perlite also doesn't seem to draw moisture away from the eggs as vermic does when it starts to dry out because of its less absorbant nature. I'd use as much as you can stuff in the egg box and keep it a bit dryer and I don't think you will need to cover them with anything to disapate water droplets. I've been using it for about 6 years now and I'll never go back.

By the way, what's this $h!t, I'm your boy now?!? (LOL)

Later Buddy.

Go perlite! Look, nearly to the top of the box with white gold. These are from that girl sitting in your snakeroom right now.
