sleeping dragon

thebig_j Mar 21, 2006 07:12 PM

My beardie has been sleeping alot latly. sometimes she will sleep for a day or 2 at a time. I keep her cage temps in the low 80's and a basking sopt higher than that. I was wondering if they do this as they get older or if she is too cold or if anyone knows why she iis doing this. I dont know how old she is I just know that she is a little bit old i rescued her and am not sure her age.

Bearded dragons can sleep for prolonged periods, this is called brumation. It typically happens when the temperatures are low or sometimes when teh dragon feels like brumating. You didn't indicate what the basking temp is but it should be between 95-115F. The tank temp of 80F is fine, providing you have the warmer basking temp.

If he is a newly acquired rescue, there could be something else wrong. When he is awake,is he fully alert eating well etc? Or does he seem sluggish or sickly looking? have you had him checked by a vet when you received him and a fecal done to rule out any problems? If not, would be a good ideal to do so, to ensure he is healthy and if not, to treat any problems, such as parasites, low blood calcium etc.
