back from the vet

jeune18 Mar 21, 2006 08:38 PM

ok, the vet said lucia did not seem in any serious danger, especially since she was so alert and would eat. the little booger would not stand still while at the vet. anyway the advice about the shots was correct. he said a lizard with such thin skin should not be given shots and baytil, even in its shot form can be given orally and it will still absorb.

so no more shots, ever, and she is on baytril again to clear up her infection from her last round of baytril. he gave me the injectable baytril to give orally, apparently it doesn't taste very good because lucia puffed up and gave me the evil eye when i gave it to her and my hatched kids never act out towards me. i will have to put baby food on the end of the syringe and try to trick her

I'm sure glad you posted an update tonight; I was watching for one, worried sick over your girl. I'm relieved to hear that the vet is of the opinion that her condition is not critical.

I have always administered Baytril orally, and it has worked well for my lizards. Usually, once they taste it on the tip of the syringe, they will keep licking it voluntarily. However if she doesn't, you can always push open her mouth with the tip of the syringe, and squirt it into the back of her throat. Just stick the tip in the corner of her mouth (between her "lips" and gently press downward until she opens. It's not very difficult.

well i have used oral baytril on other lizards before. i think it has a lemon flavor, i have never tasted it, the vet told me that and just so you believe i absolutely positively hate lemon to the point that i don't even use cleaners that are lemon scented. anyway, the collards always took that well, but this stuff is really for a shot so it is flavorless except it sort of has that band aid smell. i am sure it tastes like crap.

however, i have my ways of getting it into her, baby food being one of them

Glad she will be fine. I think JohnC will be happy to hear also, he was very concerned and did some extra digging to try and figure the best way to get this girl healthy again.

I don't think any of us liked the injections or the red areas.

Glad she will be fine.

the doc said she wasn't contagious. can i put her back in with her sisters? i think its depressing her.

she sits in the corner of the other cage that is closest to her normal home.

i let her see her sisters today and she perked up and immediately sat on them in my hand.

i know they don't have feelings for each other but they do get used to each other

Glad to hear she's going to be ok. Did the vet have a name for it and what caused it? Houston never had any shots. What is this Batril that you are talking about? What is it for? Should Houston be having it? He seems to be healthy without additives although he's still a thin lizard.

Hey there, I just saw this post. Baytril is an antibiotic that is used frequently in reptiles to treat infection. It is not for nutritional deficiencies, so your Houston shouldn't need it. It is an excellent drug for infections, though.
